How to separate facts, assumptions and blind spots

Use four buckets

  1. Verified facts: supported by reliable current evidence.
  2. Supplied information: received from a party but not independently verified.
  3. Assumptions: beliefs used to make the plan work.
  4. Unknowns: missing matters that could affect the decision.

Turn unknowns into actions

Assign an owner, evidence source and deadline to each material unknown. If an unknown cannot be resolved before commitment, decide explicitly whether the remaining uncertainty is acceptable.
